What’s your name & job title?
Andy Moores, Founder and Clinical Director of The Moores Orthopaedic Clinic.
How long have you been working with us at Dignity?
I have been working with Dignity for 16 years.
Where is your Vet Practice located?
Upton Grey, near Basingstoke in Hampshire.
Tell us a little bit about you and your team
We are a new independent orthopaedic-only referral practice, set-up by myself and Richard Hoile. We opened in May 2023 with two specialist surgeons – myself and Chris Jordan, a past resident of mine. Chris has relocated from the US to join us. Our five-strong nursing and tech team is headed by Emma Howell-Jones and we are already looking to expand the team. Richard, Emma, Chris and I all previously worked at Anderson Moores Veterinary Specialists, near Winchester.
What services do you offer?
Small animal orthopaedic referrals. Myself and Chris are happy to take all orthopaedic referrals, from the basic to the complex. The most common procedures we perform are TPLO (Tibial Plateau Leveling Osteotomy) surgery for dogs with cruciate problems, elbow CT and arthroscopy for dogs with elbow dysplasia and all manner of fracture repairs. I personally have been an RCVS-recognised Specialist in Orthopaedics for 17 years and have a great deal of experience in complex fracture repairs, growth deformities and total hip replacement (in cats and dogs).
Our goal is to offer the very best orthopaedic care at a reasonable price. Being a relatively small, independent, orthopaedic-only clinic means we can keep our over-heads down and provide very competitive pricing compared to the corporate referral centres.
How long has your practice been open?
Almost two months! If any first-opinion vets would like to visit to take a look around they are very welcome to do so.
What’s unique about your Veterinary Practice?
Most orthopaedic referrals are managed by either big, corporate multi-disciplinary hospitals, or by the peripatetic certificate-level surgeon who visits first-opinion clinics. The former are great for very sick patients requiring intensive care from multiple disciplines, but their high cost is increasingly a problem for a large number of pet owners. The latter may be cheaper but they are not specialist-level surgeons, they may be relatively inexperienced and they are often working out of suboptimal (for orthopaedic surgery) environments. The Moores Orthopaedic Clinic offers Specialist-level expertise at a clinic specifically designed for orthopaedic surgery, and at a much more affordable price than the large corporate referral centres. As an example, our operating theatres have a HEPA-filtered (high efficiency particulate air [filter]) ventilation system that exceeds the requirements of an orthopaedic theatre in a human hospital. This means fewer infections and better outcomes for patients.
Specialist-level care combined with specialist facilities means better patient outcomes, and at a very competitive price.
What is the favourite part of your job?
We treat a lot of chronic orthopaedic conditions, and often the lameness might be obvious but the unhappiness of the patient is not. Seeing these patients get back to full activity is great but the best bit is hearing how the cat or dog is playing again and how much happier they seem to their owner.
What is the best way for clients to get in touch with you?
We are just south of Basingstoke and very close to the M3, in the beautiful Hampshire village of Upton Grey. You can find our website and contact details below.
